Writers

Founded in Kenya in 2020, Sinema Focus officially launched its website in 2023 with a mission to become the leading voice in film, TV, and theatre journalism in East Africa.

The publication was born out of the need to adequately cover the Kenyan film and television industry with in-depth reporting and analysis beyond sensationalism and clickbait headlines.

Now, we’re actively expanding this coverage to all of East Africa, and whenever relevant, the rest of the continent (especially South Africa and Nigeria).

The African film and TV landscape is evolving rapidly, shaped by policy and regulation changes, streaming shifts from global streamers like Netflix and Prime Video rethinking their strategies to African streamers like Showmax seeking global partners, growing international recognition that has opened new distribution and funding opportunities, new technologies like AI and bold new voices eager to make a mark.

For African film journalism, there has never been a more critical time for deep and insightful coverage to contextualise this growth and the challenges that come with it.

As such, we’re seeking writers with:

  • A strong knowledge of the film & TV business in East Africa and Africa, from streaming, distribution, policy, emerging trends etc.
  • Sharp analytical skills and are able to observe and interpret industry trends with depth, accuracy, and originality.
  • A unique voice and writing style for a variety of content including features, opinion pieces, reviews or industry insights etc.
  • Commitment to journalistic storytelling with research, balanced perspectives, and uncovering untold stories.
  • The ability to work remotely, take initiative in exploring opportunities and meet deadlines.

As a publication, we’re not just looking for reviews. We want to actively engage our readers with insightful, well-researched and thought-provoking stories that will captivate them and keep them coming back for more. From industry analysis, market reports, investigative features, interviews, profiles and commentary, we’re looking for stories that will spark conversations and add value to the growth of the industry.

Does this sound like you? Send the following to [email protected]:

  • A brief bio introducing yourself.
  • Two writing samples (published or unpublished).

Please note: While we’re prioritising writers based in East Africa, this opportunity is also open to writers across Africa.

Application deadline: Monday 31 March 2025.
