Sector Head – Agriculture

REPORTING TO: Chief Retail Banking Officer

JOB PURPOSE: Reporting to the Chief Retail Banking Officer, the role holder will be responsible for developing and executing business plans for the sector in line with the overall Retail Banking business strategy. The Sector Head will lead a team of RMs and work closely with product houses and retail to ensure that they get maximum revenue from all the relationships. The role involves growing the sector balance sheet, and revenue and growing customer numbers on a sustainable basis whilst managing the risk of loss on the portfolio.

LOCATION: Kampala

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Manage client portfolios within the specific sector and are responsible for providing leadership to RMs managing the portfolios.
  • Identify bankable opportunities in the agriculture sector and collaborate this with the bank proposition.
  • To structure products relevant to the Agricultural sector and grow the retail banking balance sheet.
  • To manage the agriculture-related guarantee funds and their required reporting and secure agricultural loans to minimize default.
  • Contribute to the achievement of retail banking revenue targets from the segment.
  • Together with the RMs, originate and conduct an assessment of business propositions for both new and existing clients.
  • Support the relationships to protect the Bank from loss, and maximize returns in a manner consistent with the business strategy.
  • Execute sales plans to ensure that all products meet budget commitments.
  • Provide responsive, proactive, proficient, and effective banking service to customers, thereby expanding the share of the business.
  • Develop a good retention strategy in the portfolio for existing clientele, thereby growing the wallet share.
  • Manage the asset portfolio to minimise loss and maximise returns.
  • Lead and manage the sector team including responsibility for performance, training and development, and leave management for each team member.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor in Agricultural Economics or agribusiness-related course, good knowledge of Microsoft Office software (e.g. Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
  • Training/skills in financial analysis and credit assessment
  • Credit analysis management and structuring skills
  • Relationship building and Management skills
  • Demonstrated awareness of the agriculture sector with regard to factors like farm management, government policies and projects, trends in the market, an understanding of commercial agriculture
  • A banking background preferably in Trade & Commodity Finance would be desirable
  • Strong understanding of the agriculture market, the economic factors which influence it and the needs of the business sector
  • Understanding of varied product solutions required within the bank’s customer base and ability to recommend new products for development concerning customer feedback received through relationship management.
  • Selling skills (to new business, cross-selling to all business lines)
  • Exceptional product knowledge and ability to propose appropriate financing structures for the different businesses under the agriculture and Informal segment.
  • Ability to analyse business risk especially that inherent to agriculture and the informal segment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with other stakeholders in the sector
  • Mature disposition in handling a range of client profiles and varied needs.
  • Ability to manage time and pressure effectively to ensure no loss of efficiency
  • Team management experience
  • Good negotiation and Interpersonal skills (team player, good communication and time management skills)
  • Good interpersonal skills and communication skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to deal with clients directly.
  • Ability to keep abreast of changes in the market, customer requirements, competitors’ responses and the bank’s ability to use information to identify new business opportunities and threats.
  • Should be able to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely appropriate for the relevant stakeholders.
