The Aga Khan Education Service, Kenya (AKES, Kenya) operates 5 schools in various cities in Kenya and provides nursery to senior secondary education in both national and international curricula. It is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of private development agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities for people of all faiths and origins in specific regions of the developing world.
The Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi (AKA, Nairobi) is an IB continuum school in Kenya authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate curriculum (IB) from Early Years through to Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP). With over 1000 students, AKA, Nairobi is a multi-cultural school with a variety of nationalities represented in our student and teaching faculty.
The Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi has an opening for the position of: Safety and Security Officer (SSO).
Role Summary
The Safety and Security Officer (SSO) at Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi, will be responsible for ensuring a robust safety and security environment. Working closely with the Safety and Security Manager, the SSO will implement risk-based strategies, policies and procedures aligned with Aga Khan Development Network standards. The role entails maintaining strategic safety measures, liaising with local stakeholders, and overseeing risk management for school operations, trips, and events to support the Head of the Academy.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct written risk assessments and provide actionable recommendations for the Academy and associated trips and events.
- Implement and review risk mitigation strategies and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Provide safety and security guidance to personnel, students, staff and leadership.
- Prepare and manage resources for critical incident responses.
- Establish and maintain an active information network with stakeholders and private security firms.
- Deliver safety and security training for inductees, students, staff, and security personnel.
- Provide regular security briefings and updates to the School Leadership Team.
- Generate monthly safety and security reports for relevant stakeholders.
- Investigate and analyze security incidents and advise on preventive measures.
- Serve as the focal point for gathering and analyzing security-related information.
- Monitor political and security events relevant to the academy.
- Assist in updating policies and procedures.
- Prepare situational analysis briefings and contingency planning advice.
- Undertake additional duties as assigned by the Safety and Security Manager or Head of the Academy.
The requirements
Qualifications And Experience
- A recognized qualification in security studies or risk management (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
- At least 5 years of experience in safety and security operations at a similar level.
- Fluency in English.
- Experience in school risk management (preferred).
- Prior work with schools or young people (preferred).
- Excellent organizational, assessment, evaluation and communication skills.
- Demonstrated capacity to manage challenging issues under stressful conditions.
