Research Assistant -Agroforestry scaling (CAM)

 

Overview


The Research Assistant -Agroforestry scaling will work in a specific field site where he/she will contribute to implementation of holistic project on restoration, livelihoods and carbon programming in Uganda. The candidate will interact with stakeholders, including implementing partners, local leaders, and farmers. Specifically, he/she will engage smallholder farmers in training, and the demonstration of appropriate agroforestry practices. The research assistant will layout field trials following agreed protocols in the planned comparison studies; collect data from the field trials, summarize them and forward for further analysis and reporting. At the rollout of the Rural Resource Centres, the research assistants will lead operations that will include sourcing seeds, processing and the production of high-quality seedlings.

Duties and responsibilities


1.       Extension and action learning

  • Provide training sessions on appropriate technologies to smallholder farmers and implementing partners
  • Raise awareness on the project activities amongst relevant stakeholders in the communities
  • Lay out demonstrations of appropriate practices at the Rural Resource Centre and at farmer-agreed field locations.
  • Facilitate co-learning through exchange visits among the smallholder farmers
  • Provide technical advice and training to implementing partners and lead farmers on soil and water conservation, and climate smart production practices and techniques.

2.       Research and information management

  • Layout field trials following agreed research protocols.
  • Collect field data from research trials and social research studies and support.
  • Contribute to reporting, validation and adoption of appropriate practices/ development of manuals, guidelines, training and workshop reports.
  • Contribute information for project monitoring and evaluation/ support technical report writing and scientific article writing.
  • On-ground project management.
  • Manage the Rural Resource Centre professionally to ensure adequate transfer of knowledge and technologies.
  • Prepare budgets for funds request and account for spent money.
  • Contribute to preparation of meetings and workshops in the field within their areas of operation.
  • Prepare reports and PowerPoint presentations and make presentations at meetings and workshops.
  • Lead a team of nursery workers to ensure efficiency in production of seedlings.

3.       Monitoring Evaluation and Learning

  • Support PMEL process working, build capacity of implementing partners
  • Support implementation of baseline, uptake surveys and impact assessment, data collection and complementary qualitative follow-up assessments
  • Continuous Professional Development
  • Use collected research information to contribute to scientific publication
  • Where possible use data collected to achieve academic awards.

4.       On-ground project management

  • Manage the Rural Resource Centre professionally to ensure adequate transfer of knowledge and technologies
  • Prepare budgets for funds request and account for spent money
  • Contribute to preparation of meetings and workshops in the field within their areas of operation
  • Prepare reports and PowerPoint presentations and make presentations at meetings and workshops

Requirements

  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in forestry, Agriculture, Agroforestry, Environmental science or any other related discipline
  • At least 2 years’ experience of delivering extension services and scaling forestry and agroforestry services to stakeholder
  • Experience and ability to lay out field experiments and monitor and record progress
  • Basic knowledge in MS Office packages (specifically Word, Excel, PPT)
  • Capacity to undertake basic exploratory data analysis, write reports
  • Ability to organize meetings and workshops involving several stakeholders
  • Ability to operate a motorcycle.

 

Education, knowledge and experience


•Diploma or bachelor’s degree in forestry, Agriculture, Agroforestry, Environmental science or any other related discipline

Terms and conditions


•This is a Locally Recruited position. CIFOR-ICRAF offers competitive remuneration in local currency commensurate with skills and experience.
•The duty station will be Tororo, Nabilatuk, Kiboga -Uganda.
