
Qualifications
1. Nursing Education and Licensing
- Diploma or Degree in Nursing: A Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from a recognized institution.
- Licensure: Must be registered and hold a valid practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).
2. Specialized Training in Orthopedic and Trauma Medicine
- Certificate in Orthopedic and Trauma Medicine: A two-year program in managing musculoskeletal injuries and conditions (e.g., Kenya Medical Training College – KMTC).
3. Diploma in Orthopedic and Trauma Medicine: For further expertise, pursue this diploma, available at KMTC campuses like Nairobi and Nakuru.
4. Operating Theater Experience
- Perioperative Nursing Training: Completion of a Higher Diploma in Perioperative Nursing for surgical nursing specialization.
- Clinical Experience: Hands-on experience in operating theaters, especially in orthopedic surgeries.
5. Additional Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) & Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS): Necessary for emergency situations in surgical settings.
- Continuous Professional Development (CPD): Ongoing education to remain current in orthopedic and perioperative practices.
6. Good Conduct Certificate
- Certificate of Good Conduct: Obtain a valid certificate from the Kenya Police Service to verify a clean criminal record and demonstrate professionalism.
Roles and Responsibilities
1. Preoperative Care
- Patient Assessment: Conduct pre-surgical assessments of health history, medications, and risk factors.
- Preparation for Surgery: Prepare and guide patients through the surgery process, obtaining consent and explaining procedures.
- Sterilization: Ensure that operating areas and instruments are properly sterilized and ready.
2. Intraoperative Support
- Assist the Surgical Team: Support the surgical team during orthopedic procedures as a scrub or circulating nurse.
- Vital Signs Monitoring: Continuously monitor patients’ vital signs throughout surgery.
- Instrument Handling: Pass instruments to the surgeon and maintain surgical flow.
3. Postoperative Care
- Patient Monitoring and Recovery: Observe and manage post-surgical complications.
- Pain and Wound Management: Administer medications and provide wound care, monitor for infections, and perform dressing changes.
4. Patient Education and Rehabilitation
- Patient and Family Instruction: Provide post-operative care instructions and guidance on mobility and wound care.
- Rehabilitation Support: Assist patients with exercises and mobility techniques to encourage faster recovery.
5. Coordination and Documentation
- Patient Records: Accurately document assessments, surgical details, medications, and follow-up care.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with surgeons, anesthetists, and physiotherapists.
- Inventory Management: Monitor and manage surgical supplies and equipment.
6. Infection Control and Safety Compliance
- Infection Prevention: Follow infection control protocols in surgical and recovery areas.
- Safety Standards: Adhere to facility and Nursing Council of Kenya safety guidelines.
- Emergency Preparedness: Be equipped to manage emergencies and surgical complications.
Professional Etiquette
- Appearance and Hygiene: Maintain a clean, professional appearance according to facility dress code.
- Respect and Dignity: Treat all patients, families, and team members with empathy and respect.
- Punctuality and Reliability: Demonstrate commitment by being punctual for shifts, surgeries, and care duties.
- Confidentiality: Protect patient information in accordance with healthcare regulations.
Communication Skills
- Clear Communication: Use clear and simple language when explaining procedures and care instructions.
- Active Listening: Attentively listen to patients and colleagues, valuing their concerns.
- Empathy and Reassurance: Provide emotional support to patients, especially when they are anxious.
- Team Coordination: Effectively communicate with the surgical team to ensure safety and seamless operations.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and thorough records of patient assessments, care plans, and follow-up notes.
