The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is inviting applications from qualified organizations to partner in the implementation of a pilot project on the collection of e-waste from information and communication technology devices (ICT e-waste).
Background
The rapid advancement of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) has led to increased consumption of communication devices, contributing to a surge in electronic waste (e-waste). E-waste is now the fastest-growing waste stream globally, and in Uganda, the collection of e-waste remains inadequate due to limited awareness, improper disposal practices, and other challenges.
As the regulator of the communications sector in Uganda, UCC is committed to addressing the social, environmental, health, and economic impacts of e-waste. This pilot project will focus on developing a scalable, functional framework for ICT e-waste collection in Uganda.
Project Objectives
1. Pilot a scalable e-waste collection initiative in three districts: Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono.
2. Assess the end-of-life management of ICT devices distributed under the Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund (UCUSAF) programs and gather data for long-term improvements.
3. Engage stakeholders and build capacity for effective e-waste collection and management.
4. Conduct awareness and community engagement campaigns to promote proper disposal of ICT e-waste.
5. Evaluate the effectiveness of e-waste collection processes and stakeholder participation.
6. Explore commercial opportunities in e-waste management to ensure sustainability.

UCC seeks implementing partners with expertise in e-waste management, environmental sustainability, community engagement, and data analysis to support this initiative
