Manager – Underwriting

Job purpose
The Manager – Underwriting will provide strategic leadership and oversight to the  underwriting function. This role is responsible for establishing underwriting strategies, guidelines, and risk appetite to drive profitability and ensure adherence to underwriting
standards. They will also manage a team of underwriters, collaborate with other  departments, and contribute to the company’s growth and success by optimizing risk  selection, pricing, reinsurance arrangements, and portfolio management.
Duties and responsibilities
a. Develop and execute the company’s underwriting strategy, aligning it with  business objectives and risk management principles.
b. Ensure the proper reinsurance arrangements are in place.
c. Grow the facultative book.
d. Ensure timely renewal notices.
e. Establish underwriting guidelines, risk appetite, and pricing strategies to  support profitability targets and business growth.
f. Lead and manage a team of underwriters, providing guidance, coaching,  and support to drive performance and ensure consistency in underwriting  decisions.
g. Collaborate with the actuarial team to analyze data, evaluate risks, and  develop pricing models and methodologies.
h. Monitor underwriting performance, loss ratios, and portfolio results, identifying  trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
i. Conduct regular portfolio reviews and analysis to assess risk exposure, identify  emerging risks, and recommend necessary actions.
j. Collaborate with product development teams to assess the viability and  profitability of new insurance products and programs.
k. Develop and maintain strong relationships with reinsurers, brokers and other  external stakeholders to optimize risk transfer and capacity management

Qualifications, Skills/Experience & Personal Attributes
a. Bachelor’s degree in Business, Insurance, Actuarial Studies, or a related field.
Possession of a master’s degree is an added advantage.
b. Diploma In Insurance Qualification.
c. Extensive experience (10+ years) in underwriting, in the General Insurance
d. Strong technical expertise in underwriting principles, risk assessment, and pricing  methodologies.
e. Excellent knowledge of insurance products, coverages, and policy wordings.
f. Solid understanding of re-insurance and actuarial concepts and their application  in underwriting.
g. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and  make informed decisions.
h. Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
i. Strong leadership and people management abilities.
