Manager: Competition

Job Description

Reporting to the Head of Department – Regulatory & Public Policy, the Manager, Competition will be expected to provide day-to-day advisory and support services in relation to competition matters in the telecommunications, financial and digital services sectors in order to help shape the business’s long-term strategy and commercial policies. The Manager, Competition will also manage and monitor compliance in line with competition legislation.

Responsibilities

  • You will interpret Legislation/Regulations and prepare detailed opinions/ legal advice for Safaricom on local and global competition matters.
  • You will contribute to policy initiatives related to competitive dynamics in the mobile and financial services sector and the broader digital ecosystem.
  • You will act as the subject matter expert in these areas and develop Safaricom’s agenda, activities, and advocacy strategies. You will support regulatory aspects in relation to telecommunication markets, financial services and digital platforms and services.
  • You will engage internal stakeholders, industry players, governments, regulators, external experts and colleagues to influence the policy debates and frameworks impacting the business and policy environment in the areas in which the company operates.
  • You will analyze and interpret the industry and policy trends, provide the highest quality of support, anticipate opportunities and develop strategies to ensure compliance and/or policy evolution.
  • You will scope, direct and contribute in framing high-impact research and conduct own analysis to produce robust policy collateral to position Safaricom as an influential voice in the policy debates.
  • You will contribute to the planning and effective delivery of the initiatives of the Regulatory and Public Policy team.
  • You will have the ability to provide analysis and interpretation of essential costing and pricing fundamentals including the legal and regulatory constraints that can affect pricing decisions.
  • You will review and provide advice to Safaricom on emerging competition trends in the global telecommunications industry and provide guidance on how to navigate these matters.
  • You will embed an effective competition compliance programme throughout the business by partnering with a wide range of cross-functional teams to coordinate and implement the compliance program and initiatives.
  • You will develop best practice metrics for Safaricom while benchmarking with external markets in competition management.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Economics, Business, Commerce, Law or related business-related discipline from a recognized University.  An MBA is an added advantage.
  • 5+ years’ work experience in the telecommunications, financial services, affiliated industry or regulatory/business advisory in a similar role.
  • Strong exposure in a regulatory, competition authority or oversight role.
  • Demonstrable awareness of local and global market activity with knowledge of trends and patterns in competition policy.
  • Deep understanding of the Safaricom’s business, it’s market and industry alongside key decision-makers and influencers in account organisation.
  • Good grasp of competition regulations in Kenya and globally.
  • Proven ability to influence at senior levels, particularly in dealing with internal and external senior executives on a range of issues.
  • Strong team player and excellent report writing, interpersonal skills and presentation skills.
