Terms of Reference (TOR) for Local Resource Persons for Youth First Kenya (YFK)

Program in Nyandarua County. The applicants are required to be familiar with any of these sub counties – Ol’Kalou, Kinangop, Kipipiri, Ndaragwa, and Ol’Joro Orok. Each applicant is required to apply indicating the specific region he/she intends to be stationed.

  1. Background
    Youth First Kenya (YFK) is an adolescent school-based teacher-facilitated social emotional learning program. YFK aims to build learners’ resilience skills and adolescent health knowledge, improving their social, emotional, and mental well-being, as well as their academic performance.
  2. Objective
    The objective of this TOR is to outline the responsibilities and expectations of the local resource person who will be trained on the YFK program. The local resource person will work closely with the Cluster Leads (Headteachers in the School-to-School Network) to provide support to YFK Teacher facilitators in terms of session shadowing, supervision, data collection, and other relevant assistance to ensure effective implementation of the YFK program in the county.
  3. Scope of Work
    The local resource person will be trained on YFK through:
  • Participating in a 3-day YFK training conducted by Basic Needs Basic
  • Rights Kenya and Worldbeing.
  • Gaining a comprehensive understanding of the YFK curriculum, objectives, and methodologies.
  • Familiarizing themselves with the YFK program implementation guidelines.

They will be responsible for the following tasks:

a. Session Shadowing and Supervision:

  • Develop a schedule for supervision visits to the schools they are assigned to
  • Attend weekly YFK sessions conducted in schools within their mandate.
  • Observe and shadow YFK facilitators during their sessions.
  • Provide constructive feedback and guidance to YFK facilitators to enhance their delivery and adherence to the program requirements.
  • Motivate Facilitators to conduct the YFK sessions as per the curriculum, objectives, and methodologies.

b. Real-time Reporting:

  • Regularly report to the YFK Project Officer stationed in the county on the progress of YFK sessions.
  • Document observations, challenges, and suggestions for improvement during the implementation of YFK sessions.
  • Provide real-time updates during the data collection exercise, including baseline, daily implementation, and endline evaluations.

c. Data Collection:

  • Collect data from Youth First Kenya program-implementing schools in the county.
  • Ensure accurate and timely data collection as per the established monitoring and evaluation framework.
  • Collaborate with the YFK Project Officer to develop data collection tools and protocols.
  • Compile and submit collected data to the YFK Project Officer for further analysis.

d. Support and Coordination:

  • Offer relevant support as needed to schools and YFK facilitators to overcome challenges during the program implementation.
  • Liaise with the YFK Project Officer to ensure smooth coordination and communication between all stakeholders involved in the program.
  • Participate in regular meetings and consultations with the YFK team as required.
  1. Reporting Lines
    The local resource person will report directly to the Basic Needs Basic Rights Kenya YFK Project Officer stationed in the county.
  2. Qualifications and Requirements

This is an entry-level position with the following skillsets required, (with post basic education at the minimum a certificate);

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational and reporting abilities.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Previous experience in program implementation, data collection, or educational facilitation would be an advantage.
  • Ability to move around freely across project sites using public means.
  • Familiarity with the education system in the county and national level would be desirable.

6. Duration and Remuneration

The contract for the local resource person will be for an initial period of 5 months. The remuneration will be discussed and agreed upon during the selection process, based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
