Laboratory Technician

Position: Laboratory Technician (28|28 Rotation)

Location: Tilenga

Reporting To: Laboratory Supervisor

Contract Type: Rotational (4 weeks on / 4 weeks off)

Work Hours: 12-hour shifts (6:00 AM – 6:00 PM), 7 days/week (night shifts as required)

Job Purpose

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting accurate and efficient laboratory analyses of crude oil, water, gas, and LPG samples to ensure process quality control, compliance with safety standards, and adherence to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation requirements. The technician will operate and maintain laboratory equipment, manage consumables, and support troubleshooting efforts to optimize production performance.

Key ResponsibilitiesCore Duties

  • Perform accurate testing of crude oil, water, gas, and LPG samples using standardized methods (ASTM/IP/ISO).
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain lab equipment (e.g., GCs, viscometers) and perform Level 1 repairs.
  • Record and interpret test results in logbooks/LIMS and report to supervisors/production teams.
  • Adhere to HSE policies, ISO 17025:2017 standards, and lab safety protocols.
  • Maintain clean/organized workspaces and participate in safety audits/risk assessments.
  • Manage 6-month stock of chemicals/spare parts; initiate orders when low.
  • Ensure proper labeling, storage, and disposal of consumables.
  • Maintain equipment logs, test records, and support ISO accreditation documentation.
  • Work night shifts during emergencies/process upsets.
  • Assist in training new technicians and updating lab procedures.

Qualifications & Competencies

Education & Certifications

  • Minimum: Degree in Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, Process Engineering, or Petroleum Engineering.
  • Preferred: Certification in ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and,
  • 4+ years of experience in a petroleum laboratory.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in petroleum testing methods (e.g., SARA analysis, viscosity, density, flash point).
  • Familiarity with LIMS and laboratory equipment (GC, XRF, etc.).
  • Knowledge of GHS guidelines and chemical compatibility.
