The Dutch Embassy in Nairobi represents the Netherlands in Kenya, Somalia and Seychelles, on a wide range of topics, including politics, consular matters, migration, development cooperation, trade and investment. It is a relatively large embassy, with more than 65 employees. In addition, the Netherlands Embassy represents the Nairobi-based UN institutions and provides Nairobi with an interesting working environment with the presence of multilateral organisations such as the World Bank, UN and the EU delegation. Kenya has a fast-growing economy, a strong emerging middle class and serves as a hub for East Africa. The Netherlands is well represented in the agricultural sector, and the embassy also sees opportunities in a number of other sectors to broaden economic relations and, where possible, strengthen it. The ‘trade and investment’ team of the embassy operates at the intersection of trade and investment promotion and development cooperation, at a time when the embassy wants to profile itself more on the economic relationship with Kenya.

The candidate sought meets the following profile:

  • You are in the master’s phase of a relevant university degree;
  • You have a demonstrable affinity with international economy;
  • You can work with different parties with different interests, such as government, business and NGOs;
  • You have good oral and written skills in both Dutch and English;
  • You can work independently, show initiative and creativity;
  • You can easily adapt to another (cultural) environment.

What we offer
An internship within the trade and investments team of the Dutch embassy in Nairobi offers the opportunity to get to know the diplomatic world up close. Together with six policy officers, the trainee works in the field of economic diplomacy and the promotion of trade relations and investments and the development of the Kenyan private sector.

There is a well-developed economic relationship between the Netherlands and Kenya.For the Netherlands, Kenya is the most important export partner in East Africa, the Netherlands supplies pharmaceutical products to Kenya. Conversely, the Netherlands is the third largest export country for Kenya worldwide. Many flowers, vegetables, fruit, coffee and tea find their way to the Dutch and European market.

The embassy is proactively committed to a strengthened trade relationship in the following sectors: Life Sciences & Health, Logistics, Energy, Water and Agriculture. This makes the work of the economic team very diverse. For example, the team is closely involved in the development of a ‘cooling logistics corridor’ in Kenya, Dutch companies informs about, among other things, opportunities for investment, follows the macroeconomic situation in Kenya and works to create jobs for young people.

The embassy offers a stimulating, professional working environment with enthusiastic, involved colleagues, varied activities in which there is room for the development of their own initiative. The trainee is actively involved in various activities and will be supervised by the internship supervisor, gaining insight into the role of policy officer at an embassy.

Learning assignment
During the internship you will work on a learning assignment, the exact theme and the specific interpretation of this will be defined in consultation with you before the start of the internship. We take into account your own interests and any requirements from the study and the opportunities and opportunities that our embassy offers. Together with your internship supervisor, you will design an assignment that fits within the priorities of the team. Examples of tasks currently under the team are:

  • Contributing to trade missions in the field of renewable energy and healthcare
  • Organizing round tables in the field of agrologistics or healthcare.
  • The development of studies, for example in the field of market opportunities in the renewable energy sector.
  • Setting up a project to promote access to finance for young entrepreneurs.
