Background

UNICEF Uganda and the World Food Programme (WFP) are relocating to a new shared office in Mbuya, Kampala. This move is a significant operation that requires careful coordination to ensure IT services remain uninterrupted. To aid in this transition, the ICT4D section seeks an IT Intern to support the ICT team in various tasks, from user support to setting up workstations and installing equipment. This internship offers a valuable opportunity for practical IT experience within a leading international organization working for children’s rights.

Objective

The main objective of this internship is to work with the ICT team in managing the technical aspects of the office relocation. The intern will play a critical role in setting up IT infrastructure at the new premises, ensuring continuity of services, and providing user support during and after the move.

Organizational Setting

The ICT Intern will work within the ICT team at UNICEF Uganda in Kampala. The intern will operate under the general supervision of the T4D (Technology for Development) Manager and the direct supervision of the Senior ICT Associate, Infrastructure & Connectivity. This structure ensures that the intern receives both strategic guidance and hands-on mentorship, facilitating a comprehensive learning experience while contributing to the successful relocation of the office. The intern will collaborate closely with the ICT team and other UNICEF staff to support the transition to the new premises.

Description Of Assignment

  • User Support and Initial Setup:
  • Assist in configuring computers, peripherals, and software for users in the new office space.
  • Provide technical assistance during the move, addressing connectivity and setup issues.
  • Setup of Workstations:
  • Help set up and configure workstations, ensuring they are ready for use in the new premises.
  • Organize and label workstations to facilitate smooth operations.
  • Mounting and Installation of IT Equipment:
  • Assist in the installation and connection of IT equipment such as printers, scanners, and network devices.
  • Ensure that all equipment is securely mounted and operational.
  • Dismounting of Video Conferencing Equipment:
  • Support the safe dismounting and transport of video conferencing equipment from the old office.
  • Aid in the reinstallation and testing of this equipment at the new site.
  • Post-Migration Support:
  • Provide ongoing support to resolve any IT-related issues arising after the move, such as network connectivity or hardware malfunctions.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and problem-solving during the transition period.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
  • Document the processes of dismounting, transporting, and setting up IT equipment.
  • Submit a final report summarizing the internship experience and providing recommendations for future relocations.

Key Deliverables

  • All workstations set up and operational in the new office.
  • Successful dismounting and reinstallation of all ICT equipment.
  • Comprehensive documentation of the relocation process.
  • A final report detailing experiences and recommendations.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Qualifications: Be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate programme or have graduated in the last calendar year with formal training and certifications in relevant ICT related fields with a focus on Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Science or Engineering.

  • Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.

Technical Skills And Knowledge Requirements

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with strong technical, troubleshooting, and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent knowledge of computer laptop/desktop hardware and software such as Windows 10/11, Microsoft Office suite and other common applications. Familiarity with networking, telephony, Active Directory, MS Office, video conferencing systems, MS Teams, smartphone hardware and software (IOS, Android, etc.), mobile phone service technologies and ticketing systems.
  • Have excellent customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work with various diverse cultural groups

Work Experience Required

  • While experience in ICT operations, and ICT-related project work and customer service will be considered as an added advantage, it will not be a prerequisite

Languages

  • Fluency in English is required- both verbal and written skills are required

Other Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Be a Ugandan national
  • Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office and have no other relatives in the line of authority to which the intern will report.
  • It is expected that the ICT intern will work full-time.
