Horticulture Agronomist

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Horticulture Agronomist to oversee and manage the cultivation of various vegetables including watermelon, tomatoes, green pepper, onions, leafy greens, and carrots. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in vegetable farming, a strong background in sales for both export and local markets, and a proven track record of implementing innovative agricultural practices. This role requires extensive work in rural environments and a dedication to hard work and excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Crop Management:

o Plan, coordinate, and supervise all stages of vegetable cultivation from planting to harvest.

o Develop and implement effective crop rotation and soil management practices to optimize yield and quality.

o Monitor crop health and implement integrated pest and disease management strategies.

2. Sales and Marketing:

o Develop and execute sales strategies to expand market reach in both local Ugandan and international export markets.

o Establish and maintain relationships with buyers, distributors, and other stakeholders.

o Analyze market trends and adjust production plans to meet demand and maximize profitability.

3. Innovation and Sustainability:

o Introduce and apply innovative farming techniques and technologies to improve efficiency and sustainability.

o Conduct research and trials on new vegetable varieties and farming methods.

o Ensure compliance with environmental and safety standards.

4. Team Leadership:

o Train, mentor, and supervise farm workers and junior agronomists.

o Coordinate with cross-functional teams including procurement, logistics, and finance to ensure smooth operations.

o Develop and manage budgets, schedules, and resource allocation for farming activities.

5. Reporting and Documentation:

o Maintain detailed records of farming activities, production metrics, and sales performance.

o Prepare and present regular reports to senior management on operational progress and financial outcomes.

o Ensure all activities comply with national agricultural regulations and quality standards.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Agriculture, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years proven experience in cultivating and managing crops such as watermelon, tomatoes, green pepper, onions, leafy greens, and carrots.
  • Demonstrated experience in sales and marketing within both local and export agricultural markets.
  • Strong knowledge of sustainable farming practices and modern agricultural technologies.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in rural settings and adapt to challenging environments.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and farm management software is an advantage.
  • Fluent in English; knowledge of local Ugandan languages is a plus.

Compensation:

This is a contract-based position with compensation directly linked to sales volume and performance. Details will be discussed during the interview process.
