General Manager

Our offices are in Entebbe, and the successful applicant will be responsible for overseeing and managing multiple functions within our organization, including Operations, Accounting, Human Resources, Business Development, Customer Service, Transport and SHEQ.

This role is critical in driving the success and growth of our business.

The incumbent will need to display leadership qualities that encourage innovation, collaboration, and forward thinking, promoting the success of all activities within Grindrod Logistics Africa Uganda.

The responsibilities will include:

  • Strategy: to contribute to the development of strategy for the company, by providing input to the executive team in South Africa, and to then implement and achieve the overall strategy.
  • Leadership: To build a performance culture by promoting performance excellence. Representing the best interests of the Company with the highest principles of corporate governance, professionalism and ethics. Ensuring that employees also act in pursuit of these principles.
  • Planning:To ensure the development, control and implementation of short, medium and long-term plans, including budgets and forecasts related to finance, operations, safety, people, customers and assets ensuring that the agreed targets/KPI’s are met or exceeded.
  • Operations: To ensure the development and implementation of operational strategies to optimize efficiency and productivity. Ensuring smooth and effective day-to-day operations,
  • Finance:In conjunction with the head office oversee the financial and accounting function. Submit budgets and forecasts and to analyze financial data and make informed business decisions.
  • Human Resources: In conjunction with the head office oversee the human resource’s function, including recruitment, onboarding, training, and performance management. Ensuring compliance with HR policies and procedures in line with local labour laws and regulations. Foster a positive and inclusive work environment that promotes employee engagement and professional growth.
  • Business Development and Customer Service: In conjunction with the head office oversee the activities of the BDM, ensuring entry into new markets and that business opportunities are secured to drive growth and that we expand our market presence. Ensuring exceptional customer service delivery by establishing and maintaining high service standards.
  • Procurement: Ensure that procurement strategies are developed and implemented to ensure timely and cost-effective acquisition of goods and services.
  • SHEQ: Ensure the effective overall “Health, Safety, Environment, Risk and Quality systems are in place and that the business is managed with a zero incident and zero-harm culture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or logistics or relevant equivalent qualification.
  • Postgraduate qualification in a related field preferred. MBA or MCom would be an advantage.
  • 5 – 10 years’ experience in a senior general management role within the logistics and maritime sector with cross border logistics and supply chain management experience.
  • Strategic thinker with a strong business acumen and strategic thinking capabilities and a customer-centric mindset with a proactive approach to identifying and capitalizing on business opportunities.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities, outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional communication and negotiation skills with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with clients, partners, and stakeholders.
  • In-depth knowledge of logistics operations, including accounting principles, HR practices, business development strategies, customer service best practices, SHEQ, and procurement processes.
  • Demonstrated track record of success in a similar environment and the ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Strong financial acumen with the ability to analyse financial data, develop budgets, and manage financial performance effectively.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant regulations, compliance requirements, and risk management principles.
  • Proficiency in relevant software applications and tools,
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
