Finance Intern

The Finance Intern will be responsible for managing and maintaining the financial health of the ATLAS Initiative Nigeria. This role includes managing the organization’s financial records, preparing financial reports, ensuring compliance with local financial regulations, and assisting in budgeting and financial planning. The Finance Intern will work closely with the administrative team and leadership to ensure financial transparency and support the organization’s overall mission.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management
Maintain accurate financial records, including accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and other general ledger functions.
Process payments, including grants, salaries, and vendor invoices, ensuring all payments are documented and authorized.
Monitor cash flow, prepare cash flow forecasts, and ensure timely disbursements for ongoing projects.
Reconcile bank statements and other financial statements with internal records on a monthly basis.

Budgeting and Financial Planning
Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and monitor spending throughout the year.
Work closely with program teams to create project budgets and ensure adherence to budgetary constraints.
Provide monthly budget reports and variance analysis to management.
Recommend adjustments to budgets based on financial performance and projections.

Donor and Grant Financial Reporting
Prepare financial reports for donors, funders, and the board of directors, ensuring all reports comply with donor requirements.
Monitor financial compliance with grant agreements, including tracking grant expenses and ensuring proper allocation of funds.
Maintain detailed records of funds received from donors and disbursed to projects, ensuring transparency.

Procurement and Vendor Management
Ensure proper financial documentation for all procurement activities.
Maintain relationships with vendors, ensuring timely payment and resolving any payment disputes
Ensure that procurement policies are followed, including obtaining quotations and competitive pricing.

Financial Auditing and Compliance
Ensure compliance with financial regulations, legal requirements, and organizational policies.
Prepare for and manage annual external audits, ensuring all financial documents are accurate and ready for review.
Assist in implementing audit recommendations and improving internal financial controls.

Payroll Management
Process monthly payroll for staff, ensuring correct deductions for taxes, pensions, and other benefits.
Maintain up-to-date payroll records and ensure compliance with local employment laws.
Handle all statutory remittances, including tax and pension contributions, ensuring timely submission to relevant authorities.

Financial Systems and Tools
Use financial management software and tools to track income, expenses, and other financial data.
Ensure all financial records are accurately stored and accessible for review or audit.
Stay updated on financial management best practices and recommend new tools or processes as necessary.

Qualifications
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in financial management, preferably within a nonprofit or international development organizations
Strong knowledge of Nigerian tax laws and statutory requirements
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero) and Microsoft Excel.
Demonstrated experience in preparing financial reports, managing budgets, and conducting audits.
Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical skills.

Desired Qualities
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
Strong ethical standards and a high level of integrity.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information to non-financial staff.
