What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose

The Protecting Family Links (PFL) Field Officer contributes to the implementation and monitoring of ICRC PFL activities in Somalia.

This is a national/resident position based in Nairobi with 40% travel to Somalia.

Accountabilities & Functional Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the identification of PFL needs at national level and Assists in the implementation of the PFL strategy
  • Conducts regular PFL field assessments jointly with the Somali Red Crescent Society PFL teams or as part of ICRC multidisciplinary team
  • Conducts regular visits SRCS offices in Somalia and provides on-site coaching to the PFL SRCS officers and volunteers
  • Conducts regular PFL field assessments jointly with the SRCS PFL teams or as part of ICRC multidisciplinary teams
  • Liaises locally with the different stakeholders and external contacts (IDPs camps, local authorities, NGOs and other agencies) on the different PFL issues of interest
  • Ensures that proper flow of information and follow up of individual tracing cases are done in timely manner and on monthly basis
  • Participates in PFL Meetings, drafts minutes of meetings and circulates the same in a timely manner
  • Monitors, analyses and reports on PFL needs and activities
  • Supports the implementation of management of the dead activities (logistical, admin and budgetary support)

Certifications / Education required

Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, political science or any other related field of study

Professional Experience Required

  • 4 years’ experience in a busy humanitarian environment focusing on protection or human rights activities.
  • Experience in fostering a constructive working environment for the team members

Desired profile and skills

  • Ability to work independently and in a multicultural environment
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • High level of confidentiality
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English and Somali
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite
