About the Organisation
The Green String Network (GSN) is a social movement that works with communities to heal social
and collective traumas. We design healing-centred interventions and develop innovative research
methods to learn about the effectiveness of our work. Our focus is on addressing trauma as a root
cause of violent behaviour and other societal ills, and we specialise in the prevention of violence in
a range of contexts including violent extremism, violent crime, gender-based violence, and ethnic
violence.
We use storytelling, art, and embodied practices to help people articulate the traumas they have
experienced and recognise how these experiences have shaped them. Through our interventions,
we aim to unlock new ways of thinking, behaving, and feeling, so that individuals and
communities can live more full and peaceful lives. We also examine peaceful behaviour,
particularly resistance to reactionary forces and ideas, to understand violent behaviour more
deeply.
We believe that healing is the first and fundamental step toward building peace, wellbeing, and
prosperity in the long term. By addressing trauma and promoting resilience, we believe that we
can build a more peaceful world, and one in which communities are not just surviving but thriving.
About the Project
Kumekucha Quest (KQ), one of GSN’s programme offerings, is an innovative movement made for
children, teenagers, and young adults aged 10 to 24 years old in Kenya. It is a uniquely designed
initiative that builds on the shared vision for peace in all its forms in hurting communities, as well
as engages and supports local youth volunteers to facilitate and sustain the change they wish to
see in their communities. Its design is informed by (the plights of) young adults who come from
the communities it operates in and was developed with their issues, voices, and recommendations
in mind.
The KQ movement consists of three programmes: Kumekucha Quest, Kumekucha Vijana, and
Kumekucha Watoto. These programmes seek to increase their target audiences’ understanding of
trauma and its impact on mental health as well as teach them practical skills for social and
emotional regulation and maintaining well-being. The movement as a whole will create a social
support network that youth can tap into in order to access various services and facilities as they
work together towards the betterment of themselves, their younger peers, and their wider
community.
At its heart, KQ aims to: build connections between community members; foster mentorship and
learning within these connections that promote healing, hope, and action; and empower them to
flourish without any formal framework. KQ is a social movement, not simply a collection of
Programmes, and is designed to be ongoing long after its implementation, offering long-lasting
healing and social transformation to communities. We are working to transform communities – or,
more specifically, to have transformed youth transforming their communities.
KQ was successfully piloted from April 2021 till September 2023 across three counties in Kenya,
with support from Grand Challenges Canada (GCC). In November 2023, KQ was officially awarded a
Transition to Scale 1 (TTS1) scale-up grant which began on the 1st of January 2024 and is slated to
run for 15 months.
