The position

The Aga Khan Education Service, Kenya (AKES, Kenya) operates 5 schools in various cities in Kenya and provides nursery to senior secondary education in both national and international curricula. It is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of private development agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities for people of all faiths and origins in specific regions of the developing world.

The Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi (AKA, Nairobi) is an IB continuum school in Kenya authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate curriculum (IB) from Early Years through to Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP). With over 1000 students, AKA, Nairobi is a multi-cultural school with a variety of nationalities represented in our student and teaching faculty.

The Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi – Nursery School has an opening for the position of Early Years Program Homeroom Teacher.

Role Summary

An EYP Homeroom Teacher is an informed, reflective practitioner who uses inquiry-based learning and teaching strategies to create a positive learning environment that motivates and challenges all learners to develop attributes of the IB Learner Profile to become independent, life-long learners and leaders. Demonstrates a positive and respectful attitude towards others.

The EYP Homeroom Teacher will ensure student success and provide for the individual learning needs of each learner. He/she will be responsible for creating an inquiry-based classroom and teaching within the IB’s Early Years Programme (EYP) philosophy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaboratively plan and deliver units of study aligned with IB Early Years Programme (EYP) principles.
  • Create clear, achievable objectives for each lesson and deliver well-organized, inquiry-based lessons.
  • Reflect on teaching practices to identify and implement improvements for future instruction.
  • Design engaging, differentiated lessons that accommodate all learners’ needs and abilities.
  • Integrate technology and other learning resources meaningfully into teaching.
  • Facilitate experiential learning through field trips and outdoor activities.
  • Foster a positive, safe and inclusive classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Demonstrate strong subject knowledge and break down concepts to enhance learner understanding.
  • Encourage conceptual and contextualized learning to promote deeper understanding.
  • Use varied assessment methods (formative and summative) to gauge student progress accurately.
  • Report student progress clearly through concrete, concise and developmental report cards.
  • Effectively engage parents through Parent-Teacher Conferences and individual meetings as required.
  • Maintain punctuality and effective time management for all classroom sessions.
  • Promote the IB Learner Profile attributes to develop students into independent, lifelong learners.
  • Actively contribute to a multicultural, collaborative teaching team and learning environment.

The requirements

Qualifications And Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
  • 5 years of teaching experience in an international school.
  • Teachers Service Commission (TSC) registration certificate.
  • Certificate of good conduct.
  • PYP-focused professional development.
  • Knowledge of Early Years Program Teaching.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a multicultural collaborative team and environment.
  • Be conversant with the use of technology as a teaching and learning tool.
