DAIRY PROJECT COMMUNITY FACILITATOR

Purpose

To implement Baraka Agricultural College/ Dairy Kenya Ireland (DKI) activities in the field efficiently and effectively according to the objectives of the Sustainable Dairy Farming for Smallholder Farmers in Kenya: A Climate Smart Research for Development Project

Description

Will provide technical assistance and capacity-building support to dairy farmers, cooperatives, and other stakeholders to improve production practices, quality standards, and business management skills. The Project facilitator will be on the forefront of project implementation, working daily and directly with farmers, farmer’s groups, co-operatives and other stakeholders in the project area. He/she will establish and maintain relationships with Farmer Groups, liaise with stakeholders and spearhead capacity building to the beneficiaries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Raise awareness and mobilize group members to participate in project activities.
  • Work with participating groups to formulate and prepare quarterly and monthly work plans.
  • Provide expertise in discussion group methodology and support roll out of discussion groups in Coop areas.
  • Provide expertise in sustainable dairy technology and management (animal breeding, soils & forage, animal nutrition, animal management, animal health & welfare, farm management etc.).
  • Build the capacity of farmer trainers and collaborators to deliver farm systems, farm enterprise, gender and social development (GSD) training.
  • Support the establishment of demonstration farms in BAC catchment areas.
    Facilitate internalization of farm system principles, climate-smart agriculture, agroforestry practices and Sustainable Agriculture (SA) core values among communities, collaborators and other project staff.
    Participate in implementing follow-up, training and training plans to the selected farmer groups, co-operatives and communities.
  • Reporting on follow up, trainings, support provided to groups and communities, monitoring and evaluation activities.
  • Attend and contribute to BAC/DKI staff meetings and BAC all staff meetings when required
  • Any other duty as may be assigned by the college management

Qualifications and Skills

  • Certificate or Diploma in relevant areas of Dairy production, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Technology or other related fields from a recognized institution
  • Understanding project objectives and translating them into activities
  • At least three years’ relevant experience
    Experience of working directly with communities at grassroots level
  • Knowledge and experience on working with groups (Participatory Group methodology skill added advantage)
  • Experience of developing and maintaining effective programme.
  • Experience of working with multiple partners and giving advice to partner organizations and review of project information prepared by them and providing feedback and follow up
  • Experience of Farmer to Farmer Extension Model
  • Experience of developing people through supporting, motivating, coaching and mentoring.
  • Experience of organizing and conducting trainings and workshops at community
  • Experience of effective report writing
  • Licensed and experienced motorcycle rider least 2 years riding experience.
