Credit Manager – Retail

REPORTING TO: Head- Retail Credit

JOB PURPOSE: Reporting to the Head- of Retail Credit, the role holder will be responsible for analyzing, assessing and approving Personal & Business Banking credit applications within a delegated approval authority or recommending to a higher authority those outside his / her limit, and ensuring the credit risk accepted by the Bank is of an appropriate standard and structure.

LOCATION: Kampala

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Review and sanction all proposals (new and existing) presented within personal discretion in adherence with dfcu’s Internal Credit Policies, Funding Obligations and related regulations including the Bank of Uganda (BOU) and the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA).
  • Assessment and recommendation of credit applications outside their discretion to the Senior Manager Retail Credit and Head Retail Credit in a bid to achieve the Bank’s stated objectives.
  • Exercise judgment and discretion in the evaluation and approval/recommendation to manage portfolio quality and income growth.
  • Participate in and contribute to the review of the credit policy and related product papers.
  • Provide support in structuring proposals to minimise risk and ensure full repayment, and timely responses on sanctioning of deals and excesses within agreed Service Level Agreements (SLA).
  • Train and coach, Business Bankers, Credit Analysts as well as Relationship Managers in Credit assessment/analysis, deal structuring, policies and procedures.
  • Conduct road shows on Credit underwriting criteria for staff in the Credit value chain to uphold the quality of deals booked
  • Monitor the overall quality of the Retail portfolio, through participation in the relevant governance meetings.
  • Responsible for personal adherence to governance, compliance and lending portfolio controls to ensure compliance with both internal and external regulations.
  • Grow the Bank’s Credit culture and awareness both in Credit and Business.
  • Review and adhere to Service Level Agreements (SLA) with the Business annually to ensure customers get timely feedback on their credit applications.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a bias in any of the following areas: Finance, Banking, Economics, Business Administration or similar Degree in these fields.
  • Additional training / professional qualification in Business, Investment and Project Appraisal, Risk Management and Financial Analysis.
  • Credit certification.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in a Business or Banking / Financial Services environment with at least 2 in Credit Risk Management / Sanctioning.
  • Thorough understanding of credit policies and products, FIA and BoU guidelines on asset quality.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication skills (both oral and written) to allow for effective teamwork and interaction with all levels of staff.
  • Computer knowledge (Microsoft desktop products).
  • Managerial and team building skills.
  • Ability to work without supervision, driven enough to achieve set targets.
  • Knowledge of Personal and Business Banking clients’ behaviour.
