Role Summary

Support all of SFG monitoring initiatives so that SFG can evaluate the impact of its conservation programmes & provide data for conservation research across all countries of operation.

Job Description

Performance Criteria

1. Operating

Provide support in managing mobile-phone data monitoring:

  • Provide support in expanding mobile-phone monitoring (currently Earthranger) of wildlife, human-wildlife interactions and human activity across Laikipia (and Northern Rangelands Trust) conservancies.
  • Assist the Conservation Monitoring Coordinator in analyzing the above data and feeding back to conservancies individually and collectively.
  • Provide input in improving the scientific rigor of current mobile-phone monitoring protocols (through ongoing capacity building and training).
  • Provide input for the development and implementation of the concept of a Laikipia Data Hub – using Earthranger as the central platform but integrating all available data sources
  • Assist in introducing mobile-phone monitoring to key protected areas where Space for Giants works (initially in Kenya and Uganda but further afield in future). -Managing the flow of data into Earthranger, participating in a relationship with Vulcan.
  • Managing the collection of fence performance data (via Earthranger) along electrified fences via scouts and fencers.- Building models in Cybertracker (including for social impact surveys using Survey 123)
  • Provide support to LCA in security reporting & mapping
  • Continue to develop expertise in Tableau to streamline and automate reporting for data collected
  • Supporting all Space for Giants departments with necessary mapping and data analysis needs for reports/publications.
  • Assist in managing the deployment and data flow from GPS elephant collars, reporting on and analyzing the data.

2. Support the development and implementation of appropriate monitoring systems in PAs to monitor threats and trends etc. Including but not limited to camera traps, MIKE, aerial census

3. Building collaborations with other research institutions to strengthen Space for Giants’ wildlife monitoring.

4. Provide inputs to the Supervisor and Conservation Programmes Manager to inform and shape the units strategy and five year road map

  • Providing support to scholars & interns carrying out their research with Space for Giants.

3. Industry Watchdogs

  • Attend meetings as is required with Conservation Monitoring Coordinator

People Management

1. Capacity Building

  • Highlight capacity building requirements/needs to the Supervisor & Conservation Programmes Manager.
  • Encourage team members to strive to advance and build capacity
  • Providing support to scholars carrying out their research with Space for Giants
  • Providing support to Supervisor & the Conservation Programmes Manager in management of conservation  interns

2. Staff Engagement

  • Provide assistance and collaborate professionally with interns/scholars as required
  • Engage with team members collaboratively to achieve the objectives of the unit
  • Supporting the Conservation Monitoring Coordinator

3. Direct Reports

  • Respect team members and foster a good team spirit and compliance to the cultural contract of SFG

 

Special Projects

1. SFG Ambassador

  • Represent Conservation Monitoring Coordinator and Conservation Programmes Manager when requested to do so at meetings, conferences and events
  • Represent SFG professionally and uphold the companies values at any external event or with any external parties
  • Provide input as per special assignments requested by the Supervisor & Conservation Programmes Manager  as the need arises
  • Provide inputs to fundraising strategies and initiatives

Person Specification

Key Skills: Experienced in project management impact measurement, Efficient, Hard-Working, Driven, Innovative and Organized.

Experience, Knowledge & Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological or social sciences or a related field, or equivalent, with  experience in monitoring and evaluation
  • Strong technical skills in monitoring and evaluation framework design and implementation, including Earthranger, SMART, Tableau and ESRI software
  • Experience in data collection, statistical analysis, and quantitative and qualitative evaluation
  • Experience with large data management systems, preferably in a conservation sector
  • Experience in evaluation capacity building, including training and workshop facilitation.
  • Proven ability to work in multidimensional environments
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Self-motivated and self-sufficient
