Position Title: Communication Officer

The Department of World Service (WS) of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) is the humanitarian and development arm of the Lutheran World Federation. WS provides support to refugees, returnees, internally displaced people, their host communities and communities at risk, focusing on livelihoods, quality services, protection and social cohesion. The Kenya-Somalia Program has been implementing such interventions in Kenya and Somalia since 1992. The Lutheran World Federation, Kenya-Somalia Program is seeking to recruit a National staff to fill the position of Communication Officer.
Generic Responsibilities
The Communication Officer is fully responsible for ensuring that information from the field is captured, documented, and reported in a timely manner for donors and internal purposes for Dadaab. He/she will develop and implement strategies to raise LWF’s media profile and the profile of refugees and the host community in Garissa County. The Communications Officer will work with relevant sectors to develop strategies and create content to support the operation’s publicity objectives aligned with donor requirements
Responsibilities
- Keep abreast of all developments in the area program to prepare appropriate reports, briefings, background notes, and other documentation as required
- Develop graphic content, including video and audio but not limited to infographics, social media visuals, video scripts, and storylines.
- Prepare all art works required in the area program
- Capacity-build program staff on basic photography and donor requirements on use of photographs and videos of persons of concern
- Liaise closely with all departments in order to gather and collate accurate data about refugees and assistance activities
- Lead and monitor implementation of a practical guide for all external and (where
- appropriate) internal communications materials.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of communication strategies for events,
- forums and policy submissions.
- Monitor daily media and advise on reactive media opportunities.
- Develop and pitch proactive media opportunities in consultation with LWF senior
- management.
- Lead production of LWF’s communication materials including an e-newsletter, Sector Bulletins, brochures and promotional material.
- Develop, implement and evaluate LWF’s social media strategy in consultation with management.
- Provide monthly communication reports to management
- Work closely with Information Management staff, where applicable, to ensure accurate and effective data presentation, graphics, and maps
- Prepare information as required for missions and visitors on donor activities
- Help in the development and implementation of donor activities to showcase project interventions and impact along with knowledge generation, sharing, and dissemination.
- Design dynamic and engaging visuals for social media platforms, publications, events material and signage, infographics, data visualizations, icons, brochures, flyers, report covers, layouts, and dashboards.
- Play a role in engaging with the national and local level media channels to highlight and advocate project
- objectives through talk shows, special reports, packages, and news items.
- Inform, educate, and persuade journalists, the media community, and opinion makers through workshops, formal and informal meetings to help advocate project objectives to relevant stakeholders.
- Capture the events and project activities and present them on various communication platforms to raise awareness along with showcasing the project’s impacts.
- Ensure documentation and consolidation of human-interest stories, which can be communicated externally.
- Create awareness to communities and staff of both LWF and UNHCR zero fraud and PSEA policies, create conducive environment for complaints and feedbacks by ensuring workers work with professionalism, integrity and respect the rights of the persons of concern.
- Create and develop Information, Education and Communication materials
- Research, prepare, fact-check, edit and produce professional media and communications materials for
- communities, donors, partners and ensure their timely dissemination via communications channels, ensuring highest quality standards.
- Ensure adequate communication coverage, through a variety of tools (written, video/audio, social, media) of project activities and products, deliverables, objectives and results to key donors, stakeholders, and beneficiaries
Required Qualifications
- A minimum of three years’ experience working with an international nongovernmental organization, media outlets, NGO, photojournalism and videography.
- A university degree or associate degree or a Diploma in communications, graphic design, social sciences, journalism,
- international relations or related field from an accredited/recognized institute.
- Have a certificate in communication techniques such as Photography, Videography and Graphic Design.
- Experience in online communications, including developing and implementing online strategies/content,
- social media pages and maintaining websites.
- Must possess a good conduct certificate.
- Actively protect children in every aspect of work and personal life by preventing harm and reporting child abuse.
