About The Role

We are looking for a skilled Chief Accountant to lead Group reporting and financial operations. The ideal candidate will manage financial reporting and consolidation, guaranteeing adherence to best practices, regulatory compliance, and robust financial controls. This position requires close collaboration with other departments, especially the Commercial and Insurance Operations teams, to uphold the integrity of financial data.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting Oversight

  • Oversee a multi-country accounting team to ensure reporting deadlines for operating expenses and revenue are consistently met.
  • Review financial statements from the team to ensure the accuracy of all reported numbers.
  • Consolidate financial statements for the group.
  • Manage month-end and year-end closing processes, including financial statement preparation, reconciliation, and analysis.
  • Review and approve journal entries, adjustments, and reconciliations to ensure accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.

Reconciliation

  • Conduct regular reconciliations with the Insurance Operations team, especially concerning revenue reports.
  • Ensure alignment and accuracy between finance and operations team data.
  • Review bank and ledger reconciliations.
  • Perform balance sheet reconciliations.

Controls and Compliance

  • Enforce financial controls across the business to safeguard assets and ensure data integrity.
  • Ensure adherence to best practices in payment cycles, reporting, and reconciliation with partners, underwriters, and suppliers.
  • Ensure compliance with Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and IRA regulations on all filings.
  • Develop and implement accounting policies, procedures, and controls to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Support and Collaboration

  • Support the Financial Controller in the consolidation of financial statements, budget vs. actual reporting, and other reports as required, providing commentary, and ensuring accurate and timely presentation to management.

Finance Ops

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the accounting department, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger entries.
  • Coordinate and liaise with external auditors, tax authorities, and regulatory agencies to facilitate audits, tax filings, and compliance requirements.
  • Monitor cash flow liquidity.
  • Stay updated on accounting standards, regulations, and best practices to ensure compliance and continuous improvement in financial management processes.

Requirements And Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field;
  • CPA – K or its equivalent
  • Proven experience as a Chief Accountant or a similar role, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting and financial management.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, standards, and regulations such as IFRS.
  • Understanding Insurance-related accounting principles is a plus.
  • Sound interpersonal skills and communication skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and take initiative; demonstrate self-motivation and energy, work well under pressure, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Willingness to work as a team member with people across geographies and cultures.
