CARPENTRY AND JOINERY TECHNICIAN

JOB OBJECTIVE

  • The job holder will be responsible for performing a wide variety of carpentry duties across the university campuses. This role involves the installation, repair, and maintenance of wooden structures, furniture, and fixtures, as well as ensuring the university buildings are in optimal condition. The Carpenter will work within the Central Services Department, collaborating with other technical staff to support the daily operational needs of the university

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and maintain wooden structures, including doors, windows, frames, cabinetry, shelving, furniture, and partitions.
  • Construct custom furniture and fixtures as required by different departments and offices.
  • Measure and cut materials according to project specifications, ensuring accurate and high-quality craftsmanship.
  • Assist with the design and planning of carpentry projects as directed by the Central Services Manager.
  • Ensure all carpentry work complies with safety standards, university policies, and building codes.
  • Perform routine inspections and maintenance of carpentry work across campus buildings to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Operate and maintain carpentry tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring materials and tools are stored properly and safely.
  • Assist in setting up, remodeling, or refurbishing spaces within the university as needed, including offices, classrooms, and common areas.
  • Work closely with other trades (plumbing, electrical, etc.) to support larger construction and renovation projects.
  • Document work performed and materials used for project tracking and budgeting purposes.
  • Respond to emergency repair requests promptly and efficiently.
  • Adhere to university safety protocols and guidelines, ensuring a safe working environment at all times.
  • Carry out any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the supervisor.

Qualifications And Experience

  • Artisan Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery or equivalent qualification from an accredited TVET institution
  • Minimum of (3) years relevant working experience as a carpenter, preferably in an institutional or commercial setting.
  • Basic knowledge and experience in welding and fabrication will be an added advantage.
