Job Introduction
Within the BBC World Service Group, Business Development is responsible for securing, managing and developing the external strategic partnerships which deliver the majority of the BBC’s audience reach around the world. Business Development represent the BBC offer in multiple languages across TV, Radio and Digital in a diverse range of advanced and developing media markets globally.
The team’s priority is to increase the reach of BBC services outside the UK whilst also ensuring the BBC’s reputation is protected and revenue is generated if and where appropriate. Where required and regulations allow, broadcast licenses and platform presence are also acquired for the BBC. The team has both an acquisition and selling role in multiple diverse markets often having to take into account significant barriers and political sensitivities related to genres such as news.
Business Development also has a responsibility to actively inform editorial product development through partner feedback and the sharing of media market expertise.
As Business Development Associate you will work with the BBC’s external partners to build productive relationships and help ensure that the audience can enjoy our services across a diverse range of outlets and platforms. You will support the implementation of the business development plan.
You will work internally with multiple stakeholders and help prepare business cases and papers for the Portfolio Management Group and other internal boards. You will also love working in a team environment and making a contribution to projects across the business.
Main Responsibilities
We’re Looking For a Talented Individual To Help Develop And Enhance Our Business Activities In East And Southern Africa As We Seek Opportunities To Grow Audience Through Partnerships With Digital, Broadcast And Emerging Platforms. In Addition To Partnerships, The Successful Applicant Will Have Focus On Supporting BBC World Service Digital First Strategy Aimed At Increasing Direct Engagement On The BBC Platforms. In Addition
- This job includes Content Licensing, Business Deal Structuring, Contract Negotiations, Partner Relationship Management, Performance Measurement, Due Diligence Study and Technical Feasibility Test, where needed.
- You will be required to travel within the countries of East and Southern Africa and elsewhere as necessary, sometimes at short notice, to account manage relationships, address and resolve issues and to progress identified prospects and opportunities.
- As required to attend conferences internal or external and constantly develop contact networks, knowledge and understanding of broadcast platforms, digital platforms, social media outlets, market trends and be up to date with technological advances in the digital area.
- To work with the Business Development Manager East and Southern Africa to deliver a broadcast and digital business development strategy to meet both audience reach and commercial targets and to help inform editorial product development.
- Manage a network of BBC FM relays in the East & Southern Africa region.
- Working with World Service Technical Distribution coordinate equipment installation at BBC relays and partner stations. In case of technical issues trouble-shoot solutions with the BBC distribution team.
Are you the Right Candidate?
You will have experience working in the Business Development, Monetization or Partnership Management role in a content or platform company.
- Excellent understanding of the Media Market Landscape and of the emerging trends in the content and platform space in East & Southern Africa with significant prior work experience in areas of content licensing, placement, promotion and monetization.
- You will have a focus on driving meaningful partnerships to increase audience reach, Commercial Income and Impact as needed.
- Huge exposure of working with content partners, digital and/or broadcast platforms across two or more Languages including English, Swahili, Somali, Amharic, Afaan Oromo and Tigrinya will be a plus.
- Excellent Negotiating, Influencing and Networking skills are essential to this role.
