Associate

An opportunity has become available for an Associate to join the Corporate Commercial and Employment team in our Kenya | Nairobi office. This is an excellent opportunity to join a leading law team offering a dynamic work environment and exposure to diverse matters and clients.

OVERVIEW

The work involves all aspects of corporate commercial law, both litigious and consulting/advisory together with non-contentious employment advisory. The successful candidate will be expected to assume responsibility for working closely with clients as well as managing elements of various matters. As such, this role will offer the candidate an opportunity to develop excellent legal advisory and commercial drafting skills.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Researching law and furnishing legal opinions
  • Ensuring that the firm complies with relevant regulations and organizational policies
  • Attending consultations with clients and counsel
  • Providing legal advice and guidance to clients, ensuring they are informed about their options and legal status
  • Attending to all aspects of proceedings, including collating evidence and witness consultations
  • General practice management including inter alia: managing files and attending to the recovery of fees
  • Liaising with opposing attorneys
  • Building and maintaining relationships (both internally and externally) with clients / potential new clients
  • Assisting with negotiating and drafting of various corporate documents and agreements
  • Advising on corporate mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganisations, and other commercial transactions
  • Undertaking due diligence investigations
  • Attending to both smaller and larger matters independently

SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE

  • Admitted to practice law in Kenya, with a strong academic record
  • At least 2 years PQE experience in an employment/commercial law department
  • Experience in corporate M&A transactions covering due diligences, project management and coordination
  • Experience in commercial transactions, drafting and company law
  • A passion for corporate law
  • A track record of providing innovative solutions to complex transactions
  • A thorough knowledge of collective and individual employment law
  • Be achievement oriented, focused, able to work independently and under pressure in a deadline driven environment, without compromising work quality or standards
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Strong analytical skills
  • The ability to self-regulate and work as a member of a team
  • Have good interpersonal skills and be able to exercise sound judgement as required.

It is also essential that the candidate demonstrates the ability to understand the needs of clients and to communicate effectively with them, as well as to manage client relations and practice management, in general.
