ASSISTANT CHEF

JOB OVERVIEW: Assist the Chef and kitchen team in delivering food that is delicious, cooked to the specifications of the customer, safe, and fresh. Support in preparing, cooking, and serving food to staff in accordance with defined standards and quality, while adhering to food safety/hygiene policies.

KEY DUTIES

  • Assist in the preparation and cooking of complete meals on the menu under the guidance of the Chef and Kitchen team members.
  • Support in ensuring that the food is of high quality and ready to be served in a timely manner.
  • Help ensure that all ingredients utilized in each dish are fresh, clean, and of high quality.
  • Assist in planning menus, determining the size of food portions, estimating food requirements and costs, and monitoring order supplies.
  • Aid in maintaining inventory and records of food supplies and equipment, and report any missing stock to the Chef.
  • Help ensure that any/all areas, utensils, and appliances within the kitchen are clean and are up to date with the highest cleaning standards.
  • Take responsibility for maintaining cleanliness in all workstations in the Kitchen and promote effective waste management within the dining room and kitchen.
  • Support in promoting and maintaining good housekeeping practices, enforcing sanitation regulations, and safety standards.
  • Assist, supervise, and guide kitchen helpers to ensure that agreed standards and targets are maintained.
  • Implement and adhere to Food Safety Management systems, including HACCP systems, as directed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Employee Relations Manager or manager-on-duty.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Chef or supervisor.

REQUIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of a Certificate in Catering and Hotel Management.
  • One year of working experience in a similar role.
  • A basic understanding of Local Ugandan Cuisine.
  • Experience in assisting with ordering and communicating with suppliers and vendors.
  • Knowledge of quality control, food hygiene, and safe working practices in managing kitchen teams and communicating effectively.

  • Should possess good Customer Care skills, Communication skills, Interpersonal skills, Records management skills, Confidentiality, professional skills, and good behavioral competencies.
  • Should be highly responsible, reliable, and flexible.
  • Should be able to bend, and lift to 40 Kgs with the ability to stand for extended periods.
