Programme Communications Intern

WFD is looking for an intern based in Nairobi, Kenya to be a part of its effort to support leaders in communities, politics and parliament. 

Length: Up to 3 months, commencing July 2024 (specific start date flexible)

Hours: 5 days a week. Hours can be worked flexibly and adapted to suit individual and business needs (working in WFD’s office and related programme areas)

Expenses: This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity. This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity, however WFD will provide the intern with reasonable travel costs and expenses, including a daily allowance for lunch.

Main Purpose of the Placement:

WFD is offering an internship opportunity to expose successful candidates to practical experience in an international development organisation and learn the fundamental principles of programme management within the democracy assistance sector.

Working alongside WFD’s Regional Communications Manager and the Kenya’s Programme team, the Intern will:

  1. Support in the Programme team with social media management including live tweeting of programme activities, dissemination of WFDs newsletters (Global and Africa regional newsletters).
  2. Assist in the production of meeting minutes and update of activity data on the Evidence and Impact Hub.
  3. Contribute to effective communication of WFD’s role, mission, and activities to internal and external publics.
  4. Support research efforts on the development/ contribution to the WFD Africa quarterly newsletter.
  5. Any other responsibility as may be assigned by the team.

As an intern you will be provided with mentorship support and on the job training opportunities that will help you prepare to take up a professional role in the governance and democracy support sector. You will get opportunities to meet and interact with UK and international experts on parliamentary affairs, democratic practices and governance issues.

You will be encouraged to learn about and be provided with materials and other support to develop expertise on democracy, elections, parliaments, accountability and women’s participation in the decision-making process. In addition, you will be provided with WFD’s research materials on various governance issues and have the opportunity to discuss this with relevant researchers, authors and experts.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in Kenya and will meet the following criteria

  • Relevant educational qualifications, a bachelor’s degree/graduand in communication or any other related course.
  • Excellent communications skills (oral and written), as well as a critical eye for editing and good grammar.
  • Creativity, flexibility, and ability to work within deadlines.
  • High level of professional integrity.
  • Highly results driven and seeks to get the most from any opportunity
  • Organizational skills including ability to coordinate several tasks to meet deadlines.
