About the Young City Farmers Initiative (YCFI)
The Young City Farmers Initiative (YCFI) is a flagship program under Agrisiti dedicated to educating young people about modern agricultural practices. Our mission is to inspire a new generation of urban farmers through innovative farming techniques, hands-on training, and practical knowledge.
Ikorodu Project Overview
The Ikorodu Project focuses on three schools in Ikorodu, Lagos State:
- Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary
- Government Model College
- Oriwu Grammar School
Our goals for this project include:
- Establishing functional school farms at each location.
- Training students on sustainable agriculture practices, including:
- Vegetable cultivation using soilless mediums.
- Aquaculture for fish farming.
- Poultry farming for egg and meat production.
- Promoting awareness of sustainable food systems within school communities.
Role and Responsibilities
As an Educator for YCFI, you will:
1 Training and Mentorship:
- Plan and deliver engaging, hands-on training sessions for students on sustainable farming methods.
- Mentor students on the practical application of farming techniques, focusing on vegetable cultivation, aquaculture, and poultry farming.
- Inspire curiosity and a commitment to sustainability among young learners.
2 Farm Setup and Management:
- Supervise the setup of school farms in collaboration with project team members.
- Ensure that farms are maintained and operate efficiently, serving as learning hubs for students.
3 Collaboration with Schools:
- Work closely with school administrators and teachers to integrate agricultural education into extracurricular activities.
- Provide guidance on incorporating the farm projects into school curricula where applicable.
4 Monitoring and Evaluation:
- Track and evaluate students’ progress and engagement with the project.
- Submit regular reports detailing project outcomes and areas for improvement.
5 Community Engagement:
- Promote awareness of modern agriculture and sustainable food systems within the school community.
- Organize events or activities to showcase student achievements and the impact of the YCFI project.
Qualifications and Requirements
Essential Requirements:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Science, Agricultural Education, or a related field.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in teaching, training, or working with youth in agriculture or related areas.
- Skills:
- Excellent communication and teaching skills, with the ability to engage young learners effectively.
- Strong organizational and project management abilities.
- Passion for sustainable agriculture and modern farming techniques.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
Location Requirement:
- Must reside in Ikorodu, Lagos State, or live close to the project locations (e.g., Maya or Adamo areas). Proximity to the schools is essential for ease of commuting and daily engagement.
