Position: Electrical Technician

Job Description

The Electrical Technician will be responsible for the installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electrical systems and instrumentation in a busy oil extraction plant. The role requires a proactive approach to ensure optimal operation of electrical equipment and compliance with safety standards. Collaboration with other engineering disciplines and adherence to preventive maintenance schedules are key aspects of the role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintenance and Troubleshooting
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on electrical systems, including motors, VFDs, PLCs, SCADA systems, and HVAC units.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical and instrumentation faults in production and utility systems.
  • Conduct power quality analysis and address related issues.
  • System Installation and Commissioning
  • Install and commission electrical systems, including automation components (PLCs, SCADA, and VFDs).
  • Safety and Compliance
  • Follow OSHA regulations and plant-specific safety standards.
  • Implement and adhere to Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, permit-to-work systems, and confined space entry protocols.
  • Conduct safety inspections and risk assessments for electrical systems.
  • Documentation and Reporting
  • Read and interpret electrical diagrams, blueprints, and schematic drawings.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment history, and SOPs.
  • Prepare detailed reports on system performance and breakdowns.
  • Collaboration
  • Coordinate with mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic engineering teams for integrated system functionality.
  • Support cross-functional teams during plant expansions or equipment upgrades.

Qualifications

  • Diploma, Higher National Diploma, or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of practical experience in a similar industry (e.g. oil extraction, food processing, or heavy manufacturing).
  • Training in First Aid and Fire Safety.
  • OSHA Certification or equivalent.

Technical Skills

  • Instrumentation and Automation
  • Proficiency in PLC programming and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge in SCADA systems and human-machine interface (HMI) programming.
  • Hands-on experience with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and motor control systems.
  • Electrical Systems Expertise
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems applicable to oil extraction plants.
  • Familiarity with power analysis tools for quality monitoring and optimization.
  • Expertise with electro pneumatic, electrohydraulic, and electromechanical systems.
  • Diagrams and Standards
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical blueprints, schematics, and P&IDs.
  • Knowledge of electrical standards and codes relevant to the industry.
  • Safety Knowledge
  • Knowledge in electrical safety, LOTO, permit-to-work systems, and confined space entry.
  • Familiar with energized system protocols and hazard identification techniques.
