Senior Project Officer -Education

Under the general direction and supervision of the Project Manager, Education, the Senior Project Officer -Education will ensure the effective implementation of current education portfolio through supporting design, planning, implementation, ensuring financial accountability, continuous follow-ups and routine reporting to the Project Manager-Education.

Roles & Responsibilities

Project Implementation:

  • Understands the organization’s objectives and goals in the education sector and ensures they are implemented accordingly.
  • Supports development of project design and operational documents including developing sound budgets to assist in projects implementation for the education portfolio.
  • Takes lead in implementing education related activities and ensuring milestones are met in an efficient and cost-effective manner
  • Support program assistant in organizing all logistics for events and activities in Zanzibar

Training and Facilitation:

  • Supports in the delivery of capacity enhancement trainings related to integrating 21st century skills in the new competency based curriculum, assessment and teacher training institutions in the education system
  • Supports in the delivery of capacity enhancement activities for subject advisors, tutors, teachers and community facilitators in foundational learning and strengthening STEAM and 21st century competencies of teachers at all levels.

Monitoring & Evaluation:

  • Conducts regular follow-up visits to project sites, collecting reports, data, and stories and provides regular field and activity reports.
  • Manages education portfolio database and ensures all data is safely stored and easily accessible.
  • Supports with data inputting, management, analysis/evaluation of achievements in accordance with planned objectives.
  • Assists Project manager -Education in providing monitoring, coaching and training to staff of partner organizations as a means to develop their capacities to deliver the strategy.
  • Ensures the timely delivery of narrative and financial reports for all donor funded education projects.

Advocacy & Awareness:

  • Liaises closely with Zanzibar Institute of Education along with other Ministry of Education departments in coordinating and developing a 21st century competency framework aligned to the new pre and primary Zanzibar CBC curriculum
  • Ensures continuous engagement and collaboration with relevant departments in the Ministry of Education and other relevant entities to ensure clear alignment, ownership and sustainability of the education portfolio.
  • Assists Project Manager-Education with participation and coordination of education networks MZF belongs to including, Education Network for All(ZENFA), Regional Education Learning Initiative(RELI).
  • Supports in awareness raising of parents, community leaders and other stakeholders in promotion of life skills and values, literacy and other important education issues.
  • Attends regular staff, projects and other internal committee meetings as needed
  • Providing regular updates and reports to Project Manager -Education and ALiVE.

Education, Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in a relevant field of Education, Social Works, Community Development.
  • 4+ years working experience in the development sector, especially NGOs and community groups.
  • Knowledge of issues in education related to foundational learning, 21st century skills development, life skills and values, etc.
  • Has experience delivering projects or initiatives related to improving quality education, especially at primary and secondary level, including policy issues, teacher professional development, curriculum design and development, assessments, quality assurance, etc.
  • Has firm grasp of education issues specific to Zanzibar and understands how the education sector works including knowledge of key players.
  • Good knowledge of project design and management, with conceptual understanding and required competency in planning, oversight, problem-solving and follow-through.
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to poverty-related development and gender issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and well-developed written and oral communications skills in Swahili/English.
  • Good written English skills, particularly report writing skills.
  • Strong ICT skills (Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Language requirements: Fluency in English & Swahili.
